When visiting Alaska, you can’t go back home without some souvenirs – you need something that will remind you of this beautiful place.
But where do you go shopping in this sparsely populated state?
As the biggest city in the state, it’s quite obvious that most of the top shopping centers in Alaska are located in Anchorage.
Top 5 Places for Shopping in Alaska
Here are some of the top shopping malls in Alaska:
1. Anchorage 5th Avenue Mall
The Anchorage 5th Avenue Mall is a huge upscale mall on the 5th Avenue in Anchorage, Alaska. The mall was established in 1987 and has undergone several phases of expansion to reach its current size of occupying a cumulative retail space of 0.447 million square feet in six floors.
The mall remains among the most popular shopping destinations in Anchorage – and by extension the entire state of Alaska. It’s also one of the few malls in the state with two anchor tenants.
To increase its public appeal, the Simon Property Group that owns the mall has invested heavily in improving its aesthetic design with features such as a skylit roof and a two-story skywalk.
The mall is opened between 9 AM and 10 PM every day.
2. The Dimond Center
The Dimond Center is another excellent spot to do your shopping in Alaska. The mall is located along the E. Dimond Boulevard in Anchorage, Alaska.
It is the largest of its type in Alaska and North America, occupying a total floor area of 0.728 million square feet on the building’s two main floors. Best Buy is the mall’s anchor tenant and is where most Alaskans do their bulk shopping. There are 200 more stores at the mall, giving shoppers a wide array of choices.
Established in 1977, the Dimond Center takes pride in being one of the pioneering shopping centers in Anchorage and boasts of having a rich heritage and history.
However, as is the case with many malls in the city, The Dimond Center has no provision for 24-hour shopping since it’s opened between 10 AM and 9 PM on Mondays through to Saturdays, and between 12 PM and 7 PM on Sundays.
3. The Tikahtnu Commons
Malls are certainly large in terms of the retail space they occupy, but they are seriously dwarfed by the even larger power centers, and Anchorage is home to some of the largest in the country.
Tikahtnu Commons is a power center situated along the North Muldoon Road in Anchorage and is considered the best shopping center in the Eastern part of Anchorage.
Tikahtnu Commons’ immense size sets it in a class of its own. It sits on a 95-acre piece of real estate and is made up of 0.9 million square feet of retail space – the largest in the entire state.
And if you think the two anchor tenants in the Anchorage 5th Avenue Mall is impressive, then you’ll be surprised to find out that Tikahtnu has a total of nine anchor tenants.
Now that’s one huge shopping center.
4. Glenn Square
Another power center in Anchorage that almost rivals Tikahtnu Commons in size is the Glenn Square.
This shopping center sits on a 25-acre piece of land in the Anchorage neighborhood of Mountain View. Construction of Glenn Square started in 2007 and currently occupies a total retail space of 0.25 million square feet.
Just like other power centers, Glenn Square has several anchor tenants. One of its main anchor tenants is Bass Pro Shops which occupies a retail space of 80,000 square feet. Glenn Square houses hundreds of shops, offering you a wide variety of options to select from.
5. Northway Mall
Back to the beloved malls, you get yet another perfect shopping destination in Alaska – the Northway Mall. This beautiful mall is an upscale mall found in Anchorage, occupying a total retail space of 25,000 square feet. It’s still a relatively large shopping center.
This family-oriented mall has everything you need – from kids’ toys, to groceries, to kitchenware, to food and drinks.
